Clean Energy

Solar

In solar energy, the solar panel receives the sunlight and converts it to electricity.

Wind

In wind energy, the heavy windmills are rotated by the strong wind. The generator converts the motion into electricity.

Water

The hydropower is the same as the wind energy. Instead of the wind, the force of the water operates the turbine.

Geothermal

In geothermal energy, the heat energy is converted into electricity through various procedures.

Nuclear

The breaking of atoms release a high quantity of heat. This heat is converted and used to run turbines to produce energy.

Hydropower

Ten Things That You Didn’t know About Hydropower

The hydropower or water power is the powers that is obtained from falling water or fast running water and convert them to use it for other purposes.

We all know that hydropower is not very common. Hence there is a lot about it that most of us have no idea about. In this article, we shall see some interesting facts about hydropower.

The oldest source of power

The hydropower is one of the oldest methods of generating power in the earth. It is said that farmers in Greece used the force of the water to grind the grains. Even in some old literary works, there are a lot of instances where the concept of hydropower has been mentioned.

Size does not matter

When we think of hydropower, the only thing that comes to our minds is huge dams and turbines to harness the hydropower. Basically, we associate hydropower with huge facilities. But on the contrary, the hydropower plants can be of small size. All you need to a considerable amount of force from the falling water. Hence municipal water facilities and irrigation ditches can also be used for this purpose.

Niagara Falls- The first hydropower plant

Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls was the first to have a hydroelectric generation facility. It was built in the year 1881 by Charles Brush who connected a generator to a turbine and produced electricity.

The Washington – Electricity

Even though most of the states in the county use hydropower up to a certain level, nothing can come on par with the amount of hydropower used by Washington. It is said that nearly seventy percent of the power to the state comes through hydropower. There are eleven other states that use more than ten percent.

Low cost

When comparing to other energy sources hydropower is very cheap. The states like Oregon and Washington which gets electricity majorly from hydropower have low energy bill when compared to the rest of the country.

The percentage

Of the entire power generated in the country, hydropower contributes nearly seven percent to it. In the last decade, there has been an increase in the percentage from five to seven.

The fluctuations

When it comes to hydropower plants, there might be few instances when the power production from zero can go to its maximum and vice versa.  This is mainly because of the difference in the flow of water. If there is a full force, then the power production will be at its optimum level. If not the energy produced varies according to the force of the flow of water.

Pumped Storage

The pumped storage is the concept of generating power by pumping the water to a reservoir at a higher altitude and using the force to operate the turbine that it offers while it falls. In this method, the electricity that is generated is stored in batteries and used later.

Other favors

The setup at the dams to produce energy can help the fishes and other wildlife in a lot of ways. The can help them move freely around the dams. Fish ladders and fish elevators are some of the techniques that can be used.

Not used up to optimum levels

The main purpose of the dams is to serve as water reservoirs and produce energy. But only three percent of the dams are being used to generate electricity. These dams if used more amount of electricity can be generated.

Fuel

Types Of Fossil Fuels And Their Uses

Fossil fuels are the fuels that are formed by natural methods. These are non-renewable sources that are used as fuels in many ways.

In the present moment, the whole world is running on fossil fuels. It is used to power all types of machinery, automobiles and a lot more. Even though we are at a point where we are slowly progressing and focusing more on renewable sources of energy the use of fossil fuels is at its peak. We all know that these fossil fuels are going to be extinct in the near future. In this article, we shall discuss the type of fossil fuels and its uses.

Coal

Coal is the only fossil fuel that is in the solid state. The coal looks like a huge chunk of black rocks. The coals are mined by the workers by using heavy machinery from the coal mines. Coal consists of five different elements. They are carbon. Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Sulphur. The percentage of these elements constantly varies.  There are three types of coal they are lignite, bituminous and anthracite. Among these three, anthracite has the potential to produce the highest energy because of high carbon content. Lignite is high in oxygen and hydrogen content. The bituminous has an equal distribution of everything.

Coal

Uses

Worldwide coal is majorly used to produce electricity. It is also used in some heavy industries like iron and steel plants and cement industry.

Oil

Oil is more than just a fossil fuel. It is a natural resource that has the capability to impact the economic status of a country. According to the research, the oil that we have been using actually originated 300 million years ago. We all know how important oil and petroleum is to us. It plays a major role in our everyday lives. Not every one of us is driving a Tesla.

When this fossil fuel is unearthed from the ground, it is extracted as crude oil which is the natural form. This crude oil is majorly obtained from the Middle Eastern countries. It is the reason why those countries are filthy rich. This crude oil is taken to the refineries, and after subjecting it to various processes, we get petrol, diesel, kerosene and other products.

Uses

We all know that the major use of oil is in the form of petrol and diesel to power automobiles. They are used for power generation processes. Even though most of the machinery in the heavy industries uses electricity, there are still a few those run on diesel.

 Natural Gas

Natural-gas

The natural gas predominantly consists of Methane which is of very less weight and highly flammable.  Usually, the petroleum reservoir and natural gas reservoir are located in the same area. This makes the mining process very simple and easy. The mining of natural gas is comparatively easy as it is transported through exclusively designed pipelines and stored in the reservoirs.

Uses

Natural gases are mostly used for domestic and very less commercial purposes.  Some of them include heating homes and cooking.
